Former MSNBC anchor Mehdi Hasan criticized President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland on social media for delaying former President Donald Trump’s trial on January 6th charges until after the 2024 presidential election.
Posting on X, Hasan declared that he would “never forgive” Biden and Garland for not ensuring Trump faced a courtroom before voters went to the polls.
He criticized the administration’s “astonishing incompetence” and accused them of being overly cautious, allowing Trump to stand before the electorate without the burden of a courtroom appearance for his alleged crimes.
The case in question revolves around Trump’s actions leading up to the January 6th Capitol riot, including charges such as conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction of an official proceeding.
Despite hopes from Democrats that an earlier trial would politically harm Trump, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan set the trial to commence after the election, with key legal filings due on November 7th, two days post-Election Day.
The indictment, spearheaded by Special Counsel Jack Smith, accuses Trump of attempting to overturn the 2020 election results, including pressuring former Vice President Mike Pence to reject legitimate electoral votes and supporting fake elector schemes in pivotal states.
Trump, maintaining his innocence, has dismissed the case as a “witch hunt.”
Hasan’s critique highlights the ongoing debate over the timing and impact of legal proceedings against Trump. Democrats, aiming to leverage the charges for political advantage, now face criticism for not pushing the trial forward. Meanwhile, Republicans continue to challenge what they perceive as a weaponized Justice Department.
Trump faces multiple legal battles, including federal charges related to classified documents, state charges in Georgia, and a conviction in New York for falsifying business records.
With the trial postponed, Trump’s legal and political battles remain intertwined as the 2024 election looms.
