Trump Secures $3 Billion in NATO Defense Deals to Boost Missile and Drone Production

by Richard A Reagan

President Donald Trump announced $3 billion in new defense deals and joint ventures with NATO allies this week.

The White House said the agreements will expand missile and drone production in Europe. It said they will also support U.S. defense companies and American manufacturing jobs.

The deals were announced during NATO’s 2026 summit in Ankara, Turkey. Allied leaders gathered there to discuss defense spending, Ukraine, Arctic security, Iran’s nuclear ambitions and military readiness.

The White House said the agreements are part of Trump’s effort to expand the “Arsenal of Freedom.” It also said they will strengthen the U.S. defense industrial base.

The package includes missile, air defense and drone projects.

Lockheed Martin is expected to work on a Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missile sustainment facility in Europe. The company will also partner with Rheinmetall on Army Tactical Missile System production in Europe.

Northrop Grumman is set to sign letters of interest with 10 nations. The agreements would cover purchases of MQ-4C Triton drones. The White House said the move would expand NATO’s Allied Ground Surveillance program into the maritime domain.

RTX and the Department of War will begin a feasibility study on expanded AMRAAM production in Europe. AMRAAM stands for Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile.

Germany and the Netherlands also plan to buy Raytheon Stinger missiles. European production will be part of the bulk purchase. The two countries aim to double Stinger production by 2030.

Other projects are also planned.

Boeing and Rheinmetall-Italy will explore expanded production and sustainment of Boeing’s Small Diameter Bomb for Europe. Anduril will provide Poland with Barracuda-500 missiles. The White House said that project will lead to a new production line in Poland.

The administration said NATO allies will also use procurement coalitions. The goal is to combine demand for key weapons systems. The White House said that approach would lower unit costs, increase production and close capability gaps.

Trump has made NATO burden sharing a central part of his foreign policy.

The White House said allies agreed in June 2025 to invest 5 percent of GDP annually in defense by 2035. It called the pledge the most ambitious in NATO history.

The administration also said NATO allies bought more than $54 billion in U.S. defense equipment in 2025. It said European defense spending supported nearly 200,000 American jobs that year.

At the summit, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte credited Trump with helping rebalance defense spending between North America and Europe. Rutte said the alliance had entered a stronger phase. He called it “NATO 3.0,” according to Anadolu Agency.

Several allied leaders also pointed to higher defense commitments.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would raise defense spending from 1.5 percent of GDP to 4 percent within two years. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said Sweden plans to reach NATO’s 5 percent defense investment target by 2030.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Greece has already met NATO’s 3.5 percent defense spending target. Estonia’s prime minister said his country is investing nearly 7 percent of GDP in defense this year.

The summit also focused on broader security threats.

Rutte said allies must prevent Russia and China from gaining greater access to the Arctic. He also said NATO members were expected to reaffirm that Iran should not obtain nuclear weapons.

Ukraine remained a major issue at the summit.

The White House said more than $5 billion has been spent through Trump’s Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List initiative. The program lets allies buy U.S. equipment for transfer to Ukraine.

The administration said the approach shifts more of Ukraine’s defense costs to European allies. It said the purchases also support U.S. manufacturers.
