In a joint interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk dismissed allegations from the left that their administration is creating a constitutional crisis.
Speaking candidly, the two men defended their efforts to overhaul the federal government, arguing that their critics are guilty of the very misconduct they claim to oppose.
“They don’t even know what they’re talking about,” Trump said, responding to accusations from Democratic leaders and mainstream media figures that his administration’s policies are unconstitutional.
The 47th president went on to accuse his critics of political gamesmanship, adding, “They couldn’t care less about the Constitution.”
Musk, who has been thrust into the political spotlight as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), echoed Trump’s sentiments.
“They’re saying that things that are being done are unconstitutional, but what they are doing is unconstitutional,” Musk said.
The billionaire entrepreneur dismissed the attacks as baseless, insisting that his work with DOGE is aimed at restoring the power of democracy and dismantling entrenched government bureaucracy.
The interview marked the first time Trump and Musk had a joint televised discussion, reinforcing their growing political partnership. The two men, often seen as unconventional allies, appeared aligned in their commitment to reshaping the federal government.
The establishment of DOGE, which Musk leads, has been a focal point of this transformation. Since taking office, Trump has tasked Musk with identifying wasteful government spending, cutting excessive regulations, and streamlining federal agencies.
So far, DOGE has taken aim at multiple institutions, including the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Education.
Predictably, these efforts have been met with fierce opposition from Democrats and federal employee unions, who claim that Musk is overstepping his role and effectively acting as a shadow president. Some critics have even begun referring to him as “President Musk.”
Trump and Musk laughed off such claims during the interview, with the president recalling how the media attempted to frame their partnership as a hostile takeover. “They said, ‘We have breaking news. Donald Trump has ceded control of the presidency to Elon Musk. President Musk will be attending a Cabinet meeting tonight at 8 o’clock,’” Trump said mockingly. “I used to think they were good at this. They’re actually bad at it.”
Resistance from the Bureaucracy
Musk pointed to the entrenched bureaucracy as one of the biggest obstacles to their mission. He claimed that a vast network of unelected officials is actively working against the administration’s reforms, resisting efforts to scale back government power.
“What we are really trying to do here is restore the will of the people through the president,” Musk explained. “And what we’re finding is that there’s an unelected bureaucracy that is implacably opposed to the president and the Cabinet.”
Democratic lawmakers and labor unions have not taken these sweeping changes lightly. Legal challenges against the administration have been mounting, particularly in response to DOGE’s aggressive restructuring efforts.
Protests erupted across the country on Presidents Day, with demonstrators condemning Musk’s influence in the administration and his role in the reduction of federal jobs.
Musk remained defiant, asserting that the backlash was proof that their reforms were effective. “We must be over the target or doing something right,” he said. “They wouldn’t be complaining so much if we weren’t doing something useful.”
The Reality of ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’
Musk also shared a personal anecdote about what he described as “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” recalling an incident at a friend’s dinner party shortly before the 2024 election.
“I happened to mention the president’s name, and it was like they got shot with a dart in the jugular that contained methamphetamine and rabies,” Musk joked. The billionaire entrepreneur described how people’s reactions were so intense that it became impossible to have a rational conversation. “It’s like they’ve become completely irrational,” he said.
A United Front
Despite relentless attacks from the media and the left, Trump and Musk made it clear that their partnership is stronger than ever. Both men see their efforts as a necessary step to “fix the system” and restore democracy to the American people.
“When you add more competence and caring, you get a better deal for the American people,” Musk said, arguing that the country has been suffering from poor leadership for far too long.
Trump agreed, concluding that the backlash from his opponents is nothing more than a distraction. “They’re so bad for the country, so dangerous, and so bad,” the president said.
With their agenda moving full speed ahead, Trump and Musk appear undeterred by their critics, determined to reshape the federal government in their own image—whether Washington likes it or not.
