Trump Says He’ll Honor Shutdown Deal, Warns on Obamacare Costs

by Richard A Reagan

President Donald Trump said Monday he will abide by the bipartisan deal to end the 41-day government shutdown. He called it “a very good deal” and promised the government will reopen quickly.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said the agreement will restore normal operations after weeks of gridlock. Federal agencies had closed and flights were disrupted nationwide. “The government will fully reopen very quickly,” he said.

The president’s remarks came after the Senate voted 60–40 to pass the funding bill. The measure now heads to the House for a midweek vote. It requires the rehiring of federal workers laid off during the shutdown. It also guarantees Democrats a vote in December on extending pandemic-era Affordable Care Act subsidies.

Trump said he would comply with the arrangement but warned that deeper reforms are coming. “We want a health care system where we pay the money to the people instead of the insurance companies,” he said. “We’re talking about trillions and trillions of dollars — where the people get the money.”

Republican aides said discussions are underway on a new plan to replace the expiring Obamacare subsidies. The current subsidies are set to lapse December 31. The White House is expected to back measures that redirect savings toward consumers instead of insurance companies.

GOP leaders in the House say there is enough support to extend temporary relief for health care costs. The Senate, however, would still need 60 votes for any proposal to pass.

Trump said the end of the shutdown is a step toward rebuilding federal operations under new priorities. “We’ll reopen, we’ll recover, and we’ll keep working for the American people,” he said.
