The United States carried out a ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iran after announcing that another U.S. service member had been killed in northern Iraq, according to U.S. Central Command.
CENTCOM said the service member died July 18 during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone.
A second service member suffered a minor injury and remained under medical care. CENTCOM withheld their identities while relatives were being notified.
The Iraq incident occurred one day after an Iranian attack killed two U.S. service members in Jordan.
CENTCOM said the July 17 attack involved Iranian ballistic missiles and drones. Another service member was listed as missing, while four Americans were evacuated to Jordanian hospitals. They were later discharged.
On July 19, U.S. military personnel found unidentified remains at the location of the Jordan attack. CENTCOM said an examination was underway to determine whether the remains belonged to the missing service member.
Later Sunday, CENTCOM completed its ninth straight evening of strikes against Iran. The operation ended at 10 p.m. Eastern time, which was early Monday in Iran.
The military said it targeted Iranian command centers, air defense and coastal surveillance sites, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and communications networks.
CENTCOM said the strikes were intended to further reduce Iran’s ability to attack commercial ships and civilian crews traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.
President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States had launched another major round of attacks.
“We hit them very hard again tonight,” Trump told reporters. He said the strikes were conducted “in honor of” the service members who had been killed.
CENTCOM did not specifically describe the ninth-night operation as retaliation for the death in Iraq. The strikes were part of an ongoing campaign against Iranian military and maritime capabilities.
Iranian state media reported that the American attacks struck areas around Tabriz in northwestern Iran. The city is believed to contain underground missile bases operated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency said at least one person was killed near the city. It also reported strikes in several southern and coastal provinces.
Iran responded by launching attacks toward Bahrain and Kuwait. Bahrain is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, while Kuwait said its air defenses engaged an incoming Iranian barrage.
The renewed attacks have further strained an interim agreement reached the previous month. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has also been severely disrupted as both sides continue military operations across the region.
