Poll Shows Democrats Failing to Win Back Latino Voters

by Richard A Reagan

Democrats are still struggling to win back Latino voters despite signs that some Hispanics who backed President Donald Trump in 2024 are having second thoughts, according to a new poll.

The survey from UnidosUS, a Latino civil rights and advocacy group, found that support for Democratic House candidates among Hispanic voters has remained flat heading into the midterm elections.

The poll of 3,000 registered Latino voters found that 54% plan to vote for Democratic House candidates, while 27% said they would back Republicans. Another 19% said they remain undecided.

That 54% support level is identical to the share of Hispanic voters who backed Democratic House candidates in the 2024 election, according to CBS News exit polling.

The results show Democrats have not regained the higher levels of Latino support they once enjoyed. Democrats won roughly 60% of the Hispanic vote in the 2022 House races, 63% in 2020, and 69% in 2018.

The UnidosUS poll also found that some Latino voters who backed Trump last year are now less supportive of the president.

Among Hispanic voters who backed Trump in 2024, 25% said they either “probably would not vote for Trump again” or were certain they would not if they “had to do it over again.”

Still, most Latino Trump voters remain loyal to the president. Seventy-five percent said they would probably or definitely vote for Trump again.

The survey found Latino voters generally view congressional Democrats more favorably than congressional Republicans. Sixty percent said they have a “very favorable” or “somewhat favorable” opinion of congressional Democrats. Thirty-one percent said they viewed Democrats unfavorably.

By comparison, 34% viewed congressional Republicans favorably, while 58% expressed an unfavorable opinion.

The survey also highlighted a key Senate race in Texas that could become one of the biggest battles of the midterm cycle.

According to the poll, Democratic candidate James Talarico held stronger support among Texas Latino voters than Republican candidate Ken Paxton. Fifty-one percent of Texas Hispanics said they were planning or leaning toward voting for Talarico, while 24% supported Paxton. Another 18% said they were undecided.

The poll was conducted before Paxton secured victory in the Republican Senate primary runoff Tuesday night.

The survey comes as both parties prepare for a heated midterm election season.

Democrats are hoping to regain control of Congress after major losses in the 2024 election cycle. However, the party has faced internal debates over messaging and voter outreach.

Republicans have also faced political challenges in recent months. Polls have shown voter concerns about the economy and growing frustration over the nearly three-month conflict involving Iran.

The UnidosUS poll was conducted between April 27 and May 14 and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 1.8 percentage points.
