An anonymous California couple discovered $10 million in uncirculated gold coins buried under a tree on their property, according to Yahoo! News.
The nearly 1,500 coins date from the latter half of the 19th Century, although it’s impossible to determine exactly when they were buried. Although the face value of the coins is only $27,000, a rare coin appraiser has determined that several of the coins are worth up to $1 million each. Paper money was illegal in California until the 1770s, and uncirculated coins from that era are extremely rare.
The couple found the coins while walking their dog on their property. The treasure was buried in six rusty metal cans; the wife noticed one can sticking out of the ground, and stopped to investigate. The couple had been walking past the spot for years.
They are maintaining their anonymity, to prevent treasure seekers from invading their Northern California property.
The lucky finders intend to sell the coins on Amazon.com.
The coin cache may be the most valuable ever found in US history. In 1985, construction workers found $1 million in gold coins on a Tennessee work site.
