In a harrowing incident that shook the country, former President Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The attempt occurred on July 13, as Trump was addressing his supporters in an outdoor venue. Despite the grave danger, the former President was quickly secured by Secret Service agents, and he has vowed to continue his campaign without interruption, demonstrating a defiant resilience that has rallied his base.
The assailant, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was positioned on the roof of a nearby manufacturing plant, approximately 130 yards away from Trump.
Armed with a rifle, Crooks managed to fire multiple shots before he was fatally shot by Secret Service agents. The response by the Secret Service prevented further tragedy, but not before Trump was struck in the ear, and three attendees were hit, resulting in two critical injuries and one fatality.
The FBI was taken aback by the number of shots the sniper managed to fire before being fatally shot by the Secret Service.
“It is surprising but, to get all the details of that will come out later in the investigation,” Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, stated during a press conference.
Eyewitnesses reported that Crooks was on the roof for several minutes before he began shooting, and despite attempts by the crowd to alert the Secret Service, the initial shots were fired.
Amid the chaos, Trump was seen putting his hand to his ear and was quickly surrounded by agents who ushered him offstage, his resilience on display as he addressed the crowd with a raspy voice, signaling strength with a fist pump while being evacuated.
The details surrounding the encounter between Crooks and law enforcement are still emerging.
Reports from the Associated Press, citing anonymous law enforcement officials, indicated that a local police officer had encountered Crooks moments before the shooting. The officer reportedly retreated when Crooks took a shot, unable to neutralize him before he opened fire on Trump.
Trump, speaking from his Bedminster property after being treated at a local hospital, stressed the need for unity and resilience against evil.
“Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening. We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness.” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win. I truly love our Country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin,” Trump continued.
In the aftermath of the assassination attempt, Trump has reiterated his commitment to not only continue his presidential campaign but also to attend the upcoming Republican National Convention. There, he is expected to be formally nominated by the Republican Party and reveal his vice-presidential pick, which remains a subject of speculation and interest.
As the nation grapples with this act of violence, the response from Trump and his supporters reflects a deep-seated resolve to press forward, undeterred by attempts to undermine the democratic process.
