Former Democratic presidential candidate and independent Tulsi Gabbard officially announced her decision to join the Republican Party during a rally hosted by former President Donald Trump on Tuesday.
Addressing a crowd of enthusiastic supporters in the key swing state, Gabbard expressed her admiration for Trump’s leadership and his efforts to reshape the Republican Party.
“I’m proud to stand here with you today, President Trump, and announce that I’m joining the Republican Party. I am joining the party of the people,” Gabbard declared.
Gabbard praised the GOP as “the party of equality” and highlighted its historical roots in fighting against slavery. “It is the party of common sense and the party that is led by a president who has the courage and strength to fight for peace,” she added.
The surprise announcement was met with applause from the audience and a warm reception from Trump himself. “Thank you very much, Tulsi. That’s great. Wow, that was a surprise,” he responded. “She’s been independent for a long time. That’s a great thing. A great honor.”
In addition to joining the party, Gabbard has been named an honorary co-chair for Trump’s transition team, alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr., another former Democrat who has shifted his support.
Gabbard’s political journey has been marked by independence and a willingness to challenge her former party.
Serving Hawaii’s Second District in Congress from 2013 to 2021 as a Democrat, she gained national attention during the 2020 presidential primaries.
Notably, she took then-candidate Kamala Harris to task during a primary debate, scrutinizing Harris’s record as a prosecutor and California Attorney General, particularly on marijuana convictions and the cash bail system.
After leaving the Democratic Party in 2022 and declaring herself an independent, Gabbard launched her own podcast and became a speaker at various conservative events. Her military background as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves adds to her multifaceted public service career.
North Carolina remains a pivotal state in upcoming elections, and endorsements like Gabbard’s are seen as a big boost to Trump’s influence.
Representatives for Tulsi Gabbard did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital requests for further comment.
