Using Ordinary Household Items for Survival Purposes

by Robert Wayne

One thing that many preppers are good at is stocking up on gear. We can accumulate huge amounts of stuff, whether useful or not, and consider ourselves well prepared. But inevitably a lot of that stuff goes unused, and when we need it most we either don’t know how to use it, or it’s in an unusable condition.

Prepping doesn’t have to be all about getting the latest and greatest gear, however. Even common household items have survival uses. And many of them have uses that you never would have dreamed of. Sometimes it just takes using your imagination to repurpose everyday household goods for a survival scenario.

If you’re unsure how you can use everyday items for survival purposes, Ask A Prepper has a useful page devoted to exploring some of the survival uses for common household goods.

Some of them are things which most of us already know about, such as using dryer lint as a tinder to start fires or using superglue to close up wounds. But others, such as using cordage and sticks to make a makeshift tourniquet, or using duct tape to make arrow fletching, are beyond the scope of what most people would normally think of.

Sometimes it helps just to look at other people’s ideas in order to come up with more of your own. And with the list of 50 uses for common household items in a survival situation, that should be more than enough to get your creative juices flowing.

Don’t get sucked into the mindset that you have to spend lots of money or have all the latest and greatest gear in order to survive after a natural disaster or in a grid-down scenario. Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of creative thinking and ingenuity to put the things you already have on hand into use keeping you alive.
